Tyson vs Paul – I was wrong
Ed Berry
Well, I was wrong. I thought Tyson was in better shape to take on Paul. But I should have known.
For example, here is a plot that shows the effects of age on athletic performance. Concept2 has kept world records for all age groups. You can download these data here:
Records or https://www.concept2.com/records?record_type=world&machine=rower&event=1&gender=M&age_category=&weight_class=&adaptive_rower=0
For this plot, I chose the men’s world records for the one-minute row because it combines all out speed with endurance at all out speed. Whereas the 100m record is pure speed and the 500m record is more endurance than speed.
The Lightweight limit is 165 lbs. As expected, the heavy weights are faster than the light weights. Well, except for my world record at age 86. I also have world records in the 100m and 500m.
By the way, rowing speeds are quite similar to running speeds for the same distances and times.
But look, the first 3 blue dots are for under 17 years old, and Concept 2 does not distinguish lightweights for these ages. So, one 16-year-old boy, who may have been a heavy weight, outperformed older aged men except for the heavy weights from 29 to 55. After 55, it’s downhill for everyone.
The red dot at 29 best represents Paul and the red dot at 60 best represents Tyson. Age 29 beats age 60 easily. I did not account for that fact in my prediction that Tyson would beat Paul. I am biased because I am 89 and I want to think my athletic performance is still as good as when I was 20. Of course, I am dreaming.
Here is what I wrote before the fight:
Mighty Mike Tyson (228 lbs) vs Jake Paul (227 lbs) will be a fight to watch. See it on Netflix. Starts at 8 pm NY time, Friday, November 15.
Old man Tyson at 58 is more than twice Paul’s age of 27. The question is does Tyson have enough speed and power to knock out Paul?
After due consideration, I’m betting on Tyson. I think Tyson is a natural born fighter who instinctively reacts to any attack by anybody. I think Tyson’s fighting experience and instinct will give him an advantage over Paul.
It seems like these boxers are trying to turn professional boxing into the farce which pro-wrestling has become.
Pro fighters? Professional men? “Not hardly” as John Wayne would have said.
I don’t think Tyson has ever before slapped anyone so gently.
99% sure that was pre-agreed-upon to make headlines. Maybe 100% sure.
When you look at Tyson’s history, you can’t help but feel sorry him. Tyson is a very low IQ individual and he put his trust into people who didn’t give a rip about him except for the monies he was making for them. Tyson was a monster who unfortunately fell into the wrong hands following the death of his manager and trainer, Cus D’Amato, in 1985. D’Amato was the only father figure Tyson ever had , allowing Tyson to live him since he was 12 or 13 years old.. He was nothing but a money maker to the shyster promoters and managers who managed him afterwards and who ripped him off of hundreds of millions of dollars and left him in debt to the IRS and others.
I respect his desire and ability to step into the ring at 58 years old, against a hack boxer and YouTuber, Jake Paul, who isn’t even ranked in the WBC. However, Paul’s win over Tyson isn’t going to advance his boxing rating , since he has yet to fight any professional, ranked boxer. This was for show only………
